CEP Media's new freelance organizing campaign is targeted at everyone
who works as a journalist or communications professional on a
service-for-fee basis (independent contractor) in the Canadian news
media, government, corporate, non-profit or other sector.
If you work as a print or broadcast reporter, writer, producer, editor,
columnist, commentator, artist, designer, technician, technical support
staff, researcher, information officer or public relations practitioner
the Canadian Freelance Union is for you.
The above list is not exhaustive — the union will be open to anyone who
works as an independent contractor in Canada’s news media and public
relations industries — if you are in doubt about your eligibility
please contact us.
The reason for including both journalists and PR professionals is that
typically there is a crossover between the two fields and the same
schools provide training for both.
The goals are to unite everyone working in the industry in order to
increase our collective bargaining power, to improve professional
standards and to make sure that a decent living can be made.
We believe that thousands of people in Canada earn their living as news
media freelancers and independent PR contractors. If most of them join
we will become an organization with the strength to sit at the table
with corporations and governments.
For too long our individual voices have been ignored; it is time to speak together on issues that concern us all.
