The best reason for joining the Canadian Freelance Union is a desire to improve income levels, benefits
and working conditions in our industry.
As more and more people become self-employed contractors in the news
media and public relations sectors in Canada the need for our union
becomes greater. We owe it to ourselves, to our families and to the
wider community that a decent living can be made and that high
standards of craft are maintained.
While there are some voluntary organizations that operate in our
business, they are not unions and are limited to professional
development, networking and advertising of members’ skills. Because
they do not have collective bargaining status they cannot effectively
counteract the enormous economic power of the few major corporations
that dominate the media.
It is also important to create an organization that can offer access to
benefit packages. Freelancers in film, music and theatre have joined
together in unions that offer benefits. Why not us?
We must gather together the collective strength necessary to enforce
high standards of craft. As well, it is in our self-interest to promote
ethical behavior. A union will give us the tools to do both.
