The Canadian Freelance Union is looking for founding members, the sort
of people who are willing to spend a little of their time building an
organization that will benefit all independent contractors in the news
media, communications and public relations industries.
Since the CEP decided to create the Canadian Freelance Union in late
May we have been busy building this web site, printing membership cards
and planning our organizing campaign. We are finally ready to accept
founding memberships and a digital membership form is now available.
Just click here and
mail in the $25 founding membership fee. (By the end of the summer we
will be equipped to take credit card payments online.)
While all freelancers who work in the news media, public relations and
communications industries (including IT) are encouraged to join, we
especially need people willing to put in a little time building our
union.
Our plan for the next few months is to create regional and
industry-specific organizing committees that will reach out to
freelancers in your geographic area or type of work. For example, we
might have a Maritimes organizing committee and a group of magazine
freelancers; an Ottawa-area committee and a group of freelance foreign
correspondents; a Toronto organizing committee and a group targeting IT
freelancers.
The idea is to tap into existing networks of contacts to build our union. Those networks may be based on location or interest.
Join now for a chance to shape your union
Everyone who works as a reporter, writer, producer, editor, columnist,
commentator, artist, web designer, IT specialist, technician, technical
support staff, researcher, information officer or public relations
practitioner (the list is not exhaustive) on a freelance basis in the
news media, for corporations, non-profits, unions, governments etc. is
encouraged to join.
If you join now, as a founding member you can take part in the founding
convention and help determine the shape of our new union.
The cost is only $25 and there will be no other fees to pay until dues
are determined by delegates at a founding convention. It is our plan to
deduct the $25 from the first year’s dues.
If you have any questions please email freelance@cep.ca or call Michael OReilly at 807-474-5343.
Or click here to join. A founding membership card will be mailed to you.
