Two recent public information events in Montreal and Toronto were big successes for our fledgling Canadian Freelance Union.
The two sessions brought out good numbers of freelancers who came with
excellent questions and plenty of support for the idea. Most
importantly many came wiling to sign up, and to help with the tasks
ahead of the CFU.
Montreal happened on February 22nd and was sponsored by the local
chapter of PWAC (Professional Writers Association of Canada). About 35
local freelancers came out from both the English and French speaking
communities.
After brief opening comments by PWAC President Gordon Graham, CFU
President Michael OReilly and CEP Vice-President (Media) Peter Murdoch,
the floor was opened to questions and general discussion. Most people
expressed support for the idea of creating the new freelance union.
Some wanted more details and others said they were willing to volunteer
time and effort to make it work. In the end a dozen new union cards
were signed.
In Toronto on March 2nd the slightly smaller crowd – about 25 – was no
less enthusiastic about CFU. The event was once again sponsored by the
local PWAC chapter and once again led to some excellent discussion.
After opening remarks by OReilly and Murdoch freelancers chimed in with
questions, comments and personal stories from the front lines. Once
again about a dozen new charter membership cards were signed and a
number of people committed to working for our new union.
