Calling all independent (freelance) communications workers in the Winnipeg area.
You are invited to an information session with the new Canadian Freelance Union (CFU) Date: April 10 Time: 2 sessions, one begins at 5 pm; a second begins at 7 pm. Each presentation is expected to run for about one hour. Location: Red River College Downtown Campus P107- 160 Princess Street, Winnipeg - Opposite Public Safety Bldg. Cost: free!
Speakers:
Michael OReilly, President Canadian Freelance Union CEP local 2040
Peter Murdoch, Vice-President (Media), Communication, Energy & Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP)
Meeting arranged in cooperation with the Manitoba Writers’ Guild, The Writers’ Union of Canada, the Professional Writers Association of Canada and Red River College.
Background: Freelance income has plummeted over the past 25 years. And while rates have dropped (relative to inflation, or in many cases in actual amounts), rights demands have gone way up. Today it’s not uncommon to receive a contract demanding “all rights, in perpetuity, throughout the universe.”
Learn how the CFU plans to turn the tide on crappy rates, ridiculous rights demands and unfair work provisions.
Come out for an open and frank discussion with CFU leaders. Learn about the plans. More importantly, share your ideas of where we need to be going and what we need to be doing. Help us shape this new union.
