CD piracy equivalent to 10% of sales, says survey | Print |  E-mail
The Guardian

British record companies are calling for robust action against CD piracy amid warnings that it is costing the industry tens of millions of pounds.

A survey estimating losses caused by pirated CDs suggested the industry lost £165m in revenue last year - about 10% of sales. It found that 37m pirated CDs were sold in the UK last year, and that the value of them added up to the combined sales of the top 13 UK albums.

The report, based on findings from research firm Ipsos, has prompted the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) to call for intellectual property crime to face tougher penalties.
